Under direction, the Associate Planner or Assistant Planner perform complex professional planning duties as well as other related duties. SALARY: Associate Planner: $6,998.00 - $9,761.00 Monthly Assistant Planner: $6,067.00 - $8,466.00 MonthlyA two percent (2%) cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be effective the first full pay period in January 2026. ASSOCIATE PLANNER: Conducts sociological and economic studies and other research activities on a variety of current and/or advanced planning issues; compiles and analyzes data on land use; prepares reports and makes recommendations concerning research data; assesses environmental impacts and prepares official population estimates and projections; prepares and administers revisions to planning and zoning regulations; analyzes and recommends action on applications for zone changes, zone variances, and conditional use permits; participates in the administration and enforcement of zoning and planning regulations; drafts Planning Commission agenda items; acts as technical advisor to other staff personnel as required; attends meetings and represents the Department; provides information to and consults with the public; performs other related duties as assigned. ASSISTANT PLANNER: In current planning: Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data relating to social and economic trends; tabulates statistical and other data concerning urban land use, population, housing, business, industry, and economic characteristics; prepares maps, charts and graphs to interpret various planning studies; processes plans submitted for review; reviews zone change requests and assists in the preparation of planning and zoning regulations; coordinates zoning enforcement with other departments; suggests revisions to zoning regulations; drafts reports; answers public inquiries regarding zoning and planning matters by telephone, mail, or in person; attends meetings and training sessions. In advanced planning: conducts research, analyzes information, and drafts reports regarding zoning and General Plan amendments and other advanced planning issues; provides staff support to Preservation Commission, including conducting research and drafting reports regarding historic preservation matters; attends meeting and makes oral presentations before the Planning Commission, Preservation Commission, City Council, and other groups; compiles and disseminates census and other demographic information and forecasts; operates automated mapping/geographic information system; performs other special studies as needed; responds to public inquiries regarding planning and zoning information; provides back-up support for current planning activities as needed. Both positions perform related duties as needed. CLASSIFICATION: Both positions are exempt under the laws of Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions and are included in the City's Civil Service System. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Please click the respective position links below to review the full list of required qualifications: Associate Planner Assistant Planner These positions require knowledge of the principles of management including but not limited to the principles and practices of effective supervision, training, and performance evaluation and governmental planning; research methods as applied to the collection, tabulation, and analysis of data affecting planning activities. In addition, they require the ability to medical standards for the class prescribed; compile, analyze, and evaluate data; learn and apply applicable statutes, ordinances, and regulations to planning activities; safely and effectively perform required duties; reason logically and creatively; demonstrate initiative; communicate effectively in writing and orally; work independently and on project matrix teams; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California. REQUIRED EDUCATION: Associate Planner Graduation from a recognized college or university with a baccalaureate degree in planning or related field. Assistant Planner Graduation from a recognized college or university with a baccalaureate degree in a related field. REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: Associate Planner At least three (3) years of full-time paid professional experience in governmental planning. Additional professional level governmental planning experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to four (4) years. A master's degree in planning or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience. Assistant Planner At least one (1) cumulative year of full-time paid experience performing related occupational duties and exercising authority comparable to that required of the class. Additional related occupational experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to four (4) years. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: These positions require possession of a valid California Driver License.
